The Power of Purpose Interview
Two Saturdays ago, Mr. Wil Becker stood up at nine in the morning in Phoenix with an hour to fill and a page and a half of three-word notes, and talked about purpose to a room of people who’d come looking for theirs. This week he brings that talk to the balcony, and Mr. Drayke and Mr. Blackart make him defend it. It starts with Benjamin Franklin at sixteen, which is not the Franklin anybody puts on a wall. It moves through three years Mr. Becker spent working something out the long way, and what he found at the end that had been sitting on a shelf the whole time. There’s an argument about whether books actually change a man or just make him feel like one, and nobody on this balcony fully agrees. And it ends with a timid clerk from a novel nobody reads anymore, who built an entire life on something that turned out to be a complete fraud, and what he decided to do the morning he found out.
