When is the best time to plant a tree?
Something that I have long (3 decades) practiced is the value of a great product over multiple cheaper products. When I was about 12 to 14 years old, I realized that I was really hard on clothing, shoes, and other gear. I started working around that time and willing spent money on things that were a little nicer.
When I was 16, I bought my first pair of Nike high top shoes. They were around 80$. A family friend really ribbed me over those shoes. I remember him saying, “are you going to eat those if you run out food?”
It didn’t bother me and that pair of sneakers lasted a good while. Later in high school, I started wearing jump boots and I even wore them for a few years after I graduated. they weren’t as expensive as some sneakers and they lasted longer than the sneakers I was buying.
As I got older, I continued to switch brands when I saw a better quality product over what I had. So, while I may spend more on what I have, I know they will last. This all came to mind because of this pair of oxfords I retired today after I collapsed the footbed. I think I have had these shoes for 4 or 5 years. I think they ran about 120$ when I got them and only in the last week the footbed collapsed and then I realized that the tread on one sole was really thin … see through thin.
I liken this to our lives. what are we filling them with? what influences are we allowing? Are you willing to give up some good or better things for the things that are the best? I know that for me, that is always the play!

Today, I started cutting the grass and I about ¼ of the way into the yard the mower stopped working.
In the last month, I learned from Patrick Bet-David that as we grow our business, we need to let go of other chores or tasks so that we can focus on our business. Patrick says, stop doing the 10$ an hour jobs. Send your shirts out or hire a cleaning lady. Do whatever you need to so that you have more time for the more important things.
So, I crossed the street and borrowed my neighbors lawn mower. It is smaller and not as powerful. Needless to say, I spent an extra 2.5 hours mowing the grass tonight because I didn’t take time to take it in when it started making noise.
Grant Cardone teaches the wealthy buy time. He purchased a plane and people said, dude why did you buy a plane. He said, you don’t understand, I bought time. I get it, especially after tonight. Let’s say that my hourly wage is 200$ an hour for my profession. Tonight my busted mower cost me 500$ because it took me an extra 2.5 hours to mow the grass. I will be getting someone else do do it, because it will cost me less to have a lawn service.
The question for you is what task or chore around your home (or business) is costing you too much?

I would start thinking about them the 3rd week of December and gauge how I had done the previous year. Of course, like many resolutions, it was pass or fail and the changes I wanted to make felt like a mountain l would never be able to scale.
One April, when I was 14 years old, my mom pulled me aside to chat with me about how I was doing. She was greatly concerned, because as the oldest, I was getting the brunt of my parents fighting. She wanted to give me some guidance and help me change despite the example being set at home. She knew I would need encouragement to be willing to not follow in my parent’s mistakes.
Her talk provided me with some insight into people and, for a while, it stuck. Of course, I then went on to be a rebellious teen. Once I realized that I was only hurting myself with my decisions, I decided that I needed to get serious about changing me. It took a few days for me to work through the old thinking and start to weed out the bad ideas about myself and others. Within a week, I had made some sweeping changes in my life. I cut out a lot of media, music, and books that weren’t helping me in order to change my thoughts and attitude. I know that for my few friends these steps seemed extreme.
